In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, students need more than just traditional education to thrive. At Code Knights, we believe that the combination of chess and coding creates a powerful foundation for developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and the confidence needed to succeed in an increasingly technological world.
The Untapped Potential of Chess and Coding Education
Many students across New Jersey and beyond have limited access to quality mentorship in STEM fields and strategic thinking. This gap in educational resources can significantly impact a student’s future opportunities and career path. Code Knights was founded specifically to address this challenge.
Founded in 2024 by Goktug Bas, our New Jersey-based nonprofit organization provides free mentorship to underprivileged students, focusing on two transformative skills: chess and coding. But why these two particular areas?
The Chess-Coding Connection
Chess and coding share remarkable similarities that make them complementary educational tools:
- Strategic Thinking: Both require planning several moves ahead and anticipating potential outcomes.
- Problem-Solving: Players and programmers must break down complex problems into manageable parts.
- Pattern Recognition: Success in both fields depends on identifying recurring patterns and applying known solutions.
- Patience and Persistence: Mastery comes through practice, learning from mistakes, and continuous improvement.
Our mentors have witnessed firsthand how students who engage with both chess and coding develop a unique cognitive toolkit that serves them well across all academic subjects and life challenges.
The Code Knights Difference: Peer-to-Peer Learning
What sets Code Knights apart from other educational initiatives is our commitment to collaborative learning. Our founders, who met at Ridgewood High School and Bergen County Academies, discovered that teaching and learning from peers creates a powerful educational dynamic.
Our online learning hub facilitates this peer-to-peer approach, allowing students to:

- Collaborate with fellow students in a supportive community
- Develop technical skills while building confidence
- Access quality education regardless of financial circumstances
